His
works of art are tangible illusions. Derek uses his
subjects to illustrate an underlying story or meaning.
Derek's comical and quirky personality shines through
all of his pictures. Whether it’s his graphic
designs, painting or photographs there is always a
concept present.
While
this humble photographer might be the last to admit
his talent, he would be the first to offer his gift
to the community. Derek's art was recently featured
in the African American Children's book "Up the
Learning Tree". His illustrations can also be
found in several national publications including Society
of Illustrators, Communications Art magazine, America
Magazine, and North Eastern Magazine. Derek’s
work has been shown at several national galleries including
The Corcoran Museum(Scholastics Art Awards). Most of
his work is currently showing at Gallery 119, located
in Jackson, Mississippi.
They
say a picture is worth a thousand words. If that is
true Derek Blanks body of work speaks VOLUMES.

To look at
it - it’s just a camera – but
that depends on who is taking the photo. Derek Blanks
is a talent unlike others who share his craft. A photoshoot
by any other name is not the same - and you would have
to experience a shoot with him to realize that fact.
His work speaks for itself. From illustrations, graphic
design, paintings and photography - Derek Blanks is a
connoisseur of imagery.
His client roster ranges from high-profile
celebrities to homemakers. Even the most experienced
models find
themselves reviewing their images as though they are
looking at someone other than themselves. “I
walked in shy and uncomfortable and left my photo session
and felt like I was ready for the cover of VOGUE”,
says one client after her very first photo session
with Derek.
Derek knew he would be an artist from the moment he
could write. Born and raised in Mississippi, his mother
realized his talent and enrolled Derek in special art
schools. His talent did not go unnoticed as he grew
older. By the time he was ready for college, Derek
selected to attend the Maryland Institute College of
Art, where he studied fine arts and commercial illustration.
He graduated Magna Cum Laude, receiving his bachelors
in Fine Arts. While in Baltimore, he worked both as
a painter and a freelance designer for several prominent
clients such as The Walters Art Gallery, The Baltimore
Sun, and the city paper.
His love for the south brought Derek
to Atlanta, where he has become a prominent and dedicated
artist, illustrator,
designer, and photographer. Word soon spread of the
new talent in Atlanta, and soon Derek had his pick
of capable assistants. Among those vying for the opportunity
is Mississippi resident Mick Nash – who literally
travels the six and half hour distance for a chance
to work with Derek Blanks. “I have seen Derek
place the most unusual elements together to form unique,
but beautiful, transformations”, says Nash.
